Being the first cultural company in stock market, Shanghai Oriental Pearl (Group) Co., Ltd.(OPG) has 23 subsidiary companies. Its major business include tourism, radio and TV transmission service, media investments & advertising operation, real estate investment, with tourism as its strategic basis and media as its goal. By June 2003, OPG has registered a capital of 963 million RMB, with a total assets of 4.417 billion RMB and net assets of 2.974 billion RMB. It also has been listed as one of the 50 pivotal large-scale enterprises by the Shanghai government, and one of the 50 most potentially profitable companies listed in the Chinese stock market.
The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower, one of OPG's subsidiary, is the tallest Radio & TV tower in Asia and the 3rd tallest in the world. With a height of 468m, the tower is now the most recognizable landmark of Shanghai. Its subsidiaries also include: Shanghai Urban History & Development Museum (opened in May, 2001), Shanghai International Convention Center, which includes a five-star hotel, various multi-function meeting rooms and the largest banquet hall, where APEC was successfully held in 2001, and the Oriental Pearl Transmission Co., Ltd., which has undertaken wireless broadcast and TV signal and data transmission service in the metropolitan Shanghai area. "Oriental Greenland" management center, as one successful example of OPG brand output, has undertaken the operation of Shanghai Youth Off-Campus Activity Center. Covering an area of about 5600mu, this center combines youth off-campus education, sightseeing, recreation and entertainment. OPG has also invested heavily in the construction of university students' apartment for the Shanghai Songjiang College City, setting basis for education investment.
Recently, OPG is developing its media and communication industry with the support of Shanghai Media & Entertainment Group (SMEG). It has invested into Shanghai Cable Network Co., Ltd. and Eastday.com, the most influential and large-scale network in Shanghai, and Shanghai Oriental TV Station Advertising Co., Ltd. In Oct.2002, together with SMEG, OPG established the Shanghai Oriental Pearl Mobile TV Inc., which quickly gained substantial share in the mobile digital TV market of Shanghai.
