Considered by many as the most magnificent TV & movie shooting base in China and dubbed as "Chinawood", Hengdian World Studios (HWS) is located in Hengdian, Zhejiang Province, a half day distance from Shanghai. It served as the main shooting base for such films as Chen Kaige's The Emperor and the Assassin, The Promise, John Woo's The Battle of Red Cliff,  and Zhang Yimou's Hero.

Grand in scale, Hengdian World Studios consists of the following featured bases: Qin Palace Shooting Base, Jiangnan Lake and River Region Shooting Base, Hengdian Old Street Shooting Base, Ming & Qing Street Shooting Base, Great Wisdom Temple, Gunfight Shooting Base, Ancient Battlefield Shooting Base, The Ming & Qing Dynasty Imperial Garden Shooting Base, Modern Photography Studio, Qing Ming Shanghetu Shooting Base, Hong Kong Street Shooting Base, Old Residential Area, Guangzhou Street Shooting Base, etc.

 

HWS has hosted the filming of some 5,000 films and TV dramas since its opening in 1996  (until 2004). It is spread on 10 sq.km around Hengdian City, a small town of 90,000.

 

HWS only represents a fraction of an industrial conglomerate called the "Hengdian Group." The group ranks third among private groups in China and employs around 60,000 people. Hengdian Group is one of the largest producers of magnets in the world and is also active in pharmaceuticals and real estate. Film business revenues amount to 300 million RMB, far less than the 8.2 billion RMB for its electronics business and 5.5 billion RMB for pharmaceuticals.

 

HWS is also into the film and TV production business. It has produced 2 TV series in 2005. In Oct. 2004, it teamed with Warner Bros. and the state-owned China Film Group to form Warner China Film HG Corp, a production joint venture.

Hengdian World Studios is also a tourist destination, which attracted 2.5 million visitors in 2004. The two-day travel package is available in Shanghai's major tourist agencies.
