Born in 1969 in China’s southern city of Hangzhou, Jin Chen worked for the Zhejiang TV Station after graduating from a professional school, where he developed an interest in editing. Jin visited Beijing in the year of 1989, and witnessed the historical June Fourth student movement. In 1992, Jin was admitted to the Directing Department of the Central Academy of Theater Art. He graduated from CATA in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Two years later, a time when the Internet was still a novelty for the majority of the Chinese, Jin made his directorial debut
Love in the Internet Age, which won him the New Director award at the Eighth Golden Rooster Awards Ceremony.
Nicknamed one of the “Three Musketeers of CATA” (the other two are Zhang Yang and Shi Runjiu), Jin Chen made his second feature
Chrysanthemum Tea in 2000, which was marketed as a film that broke the sex “taboo” when it was officially released in China. Since then, Jin has been actively involving in various television projects. His TV drama credits include
Three Doors (San chong men, 2002), adapted from a high school student’s novel, and
Resurrection (Fu huo, 2004).
