Born in 1968 in Beijing, Guan Hu spent one year at home after high school. In 1987, Guan was admitted to the film directing department of the Beijing Film Academy, and graduated from BFA in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Guan began to work for the state-owned Beijing Film Studio immediately after BFA studies, and served as an assistant director for various film and TV projects. In 1994, Guan made his feature debut
Dirt, a film about disaffected youth in Beijing. Financed “independently” (non-studio money) and reluctantly approved by the censors,
Dirt is considered to be one of the several important films that announced the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers in China.
Mature and attractively enigmatic, Guan Hu’s
Eyes of a Beauty delivers a subtly devastating critique of sex roles in contemporary China. The film won the NETPAC award (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) at the 2002 Hawaii International Film Festival for its cross-cultural value and ambitious experiment in cinematic language.
A filmmaker and scriptwriter active in China, Guan Hu is also an acclaimed TV drama director. His TV titles include
Black Hole (Hei dong, 30 episodes, 2001) and
The Winter Solstice (Dong zhi, 36 episodes, 2004).
